BARE ROOTED PLANTS: (Supplied from mid November to March)
Most hedging is available as young bare root plants without the soil around the roots. These are available in various sizes ranging from 40cm to 120cm. These plants are grown in open fields and are lifted during the dormant season. This is generally the most cost effective method of hedging and is very successful, so long as the plants are handled and stored in the correct manner. Watering of your newly planted hedge is extremely important during the first spring and summer after planting. When buying bare root plants you must ensure that you keep the bare root part of the plant moist and frost free. If you are unable to plant your bare root plants in their final position straight away, they can be happily stored all together in a trench or hole which is then back filled with soil until the time that you are ready to plant (before March). |
ROOTBALLED HEDGING PLANTS: (Supplied from late November to late March)
Certain species, generally evergreens (as well as some mature specimen trees) are field grown and lifted whilst dormant. This is achieved complete with a ball of the original soil from the field which is usually then wrapped in hessian. The hessian is biodegradable and must always be left on when planting to avoid disturbance to the root system. The benefits of buying rootballed plants is that it is generally available at a reduced price when compared to container grown plants of the same size. These are supplied to plant only during the dormant season. Plants commonly grown and lifted as rootballed maybe Taxus (Yew), Prunus laurocerasus (Laurel), Ilex (Holly) and many conifer varieties, as well as other shrubs such as Prunus luisitanica (Portuguese laurel), or Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ etc..

ROOTBALLED YEW
POT GROWN HEDGING PLANTS (Supplied almost all year round) When buying plants in pots, it is not essential to plant them immediately, as they can be watered regularly, and can therefore be planted days or weeks after purchase with no detrimental effects at all. Prunus laurocerasus (Laurel) have become more popular of recent years although we stock leylandii conifers, as well as Buxus (Box hedge), Taxus (Yew) and other pot grown specimens.
Other pot grown shrubs can be used to create beautiful hedges such as Aucuba, Berberis, Ceonothus, Choisya, Cotoneaster, Escallonia, Euonymus, Griselinia, Lavender, Pittosporum, Photinia, Pyracantha, Viburnum etc.
